Street Pastors is a community safety initiative. It involves churches working together with the local police and council to develop a partnership of involvement and engagement to support the placement of trained and supported volunteers to work on the streets in a community safety program. As the ENFG we are hoping to gain enough local support to provide the core group of 12 volunteers who will commit themselves to a training program of eight training events. This will then provide us with a core team of trained workers to represent the faith groups on the streets as part of a wider crime reducing and safety strategy. Please check out the Street Pastors web page and contact Mark Lees for more details on how you can get involved.http://www.streetpastors.org.uk/
Update
Following the sucessful launch of Street Pastors in East Northants, we helped a similar group of churches in Northampton Town centre establish and set up a sister project in the County Town. This has now been followed up by a launch in Corby and Daventry in 2010 and possible cross over into Wellingborough and Kettering in 2011.
Since the launch of Street Pastors in East Northants anti social crime has dropped by over 60% in 2008 and by a further 65% in 2009. This is testimony to the impact prayer and action is having on Rushden High Street. We are beginning to see a total transformation of part of our night time economy and we have become a real part of the crime reduction strategy in our region.
